Weirdest Things I’ve Seen in a Home Showing (That I Can Talk About)
Weirdest Things I’ve Seen in a Home Showing (That I Can Talk About)
(real estate is never boring… ever)
If you think showing homes is all fresh candles, fluffy pillows, and perfectly staged kitchens… I have some news for you.
Behind the highlight reels and listing photos is a world of “did that really just happen?” moments. And while there are definitely things I’ll never repeat publicly… here are a few of the safe-for-the-blog stories that prove real estate can get a little wild.
1. The “Surprise Tenants” (aka… squatters)
Picture this: scheduled showing, confirmed vacant, keys in hand.
We unlock the door… and realize very quickly we are not alone.
Personal belongings. Signs of someone actively living there. Lights on. Movement.
Nothing will make your heart race faster than realizing a property has unexpected occupants who definitely weren’t disclosed.
Needless to say… that showing ended immediately.

2. The One That Definitely Wasn’t Just “Clutter”
You know when a home is described as “needs a little TLC”?
Sometimes that’s accurate. Sometimes… it’s generous.
We’ve walked into homes where it’s clear something more serious is going on—items that raise red flags and make you think,
“Yep… we’re going to step right back outside and call this one.”
Safety always comes first, and there are moments where you just know—it’s not a situation to stick around and analyze.
3. Snakes… In the Tub 🐍
Yes. Exactly what it sounds like.
You walk into the bathroom expecting… a bathroom.
Instead, you’re met with a snake casually coiled up like it pays rent.
There is no professional training that prepares you for that moment.
There is only instinct. And that instinct says:
“We’re done here.”

4. The Unexpected Wildlife Situation🐯
Sometimes homes come with… extra features.
We’re talking about animals that clearly made themselves at home long before the listing went live. And occasionally, those situations aren’t exactly recent.
It’s never ideal. It’s never pleasant. And it’s always a reminder that not every showing is going to be HGTV-ready.
5. The “We Should Leave Immediately” Feeling
This one doesn’t need a specific story—because every agent knows it.
That moment when you walk in and something just feels off. Whether it’s the condition, the environment, or the situation, you trust your gut and move on.
No house is worth compromising safety—for you or your clients.

Final Thoughts
Real estate isn’t just about beautiful homes and smooth transactions. It’s about navigating the unexpected, adapting quickly, and sometimes having stories you definitely didn’t expect when you started your career.
But here’s the thing—those experiences are also what make a great agent.
Because behind every “normal” showing is someone who knows how to handle the not-so-normal ones.
Thinking about touring homes? Don’t worry—we’ve seen it all… so you don’t have to 😅
